Understanding re’itas — Frequently Asked Questions
-
re’itas is an emerging initiative connecting Indigenous food knowledge, biodiversity, sustainable cultivation and education. Beginning with the Indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia and the Sámi peoples, it aims to develop meaningful exchanges between communities through food, plants and shared learning.
-
The first goal is to establish a small, year-round growing space in Finland for Southeast Asian edible plants. This will allow practical cultivation trials, environmental observations and the development of hands-on educational activities before expanding into a permanent greenhouse and living food school.
-
Growing these plants locally creates opportunities to learn about ingredients from planting to harvesting and cooking. It also allows re’itas to investigate whether cultivation in Finland can become more environmentally responsible, considering energy, water, growing conditions and seasonal limitations.
-
The long-term ambition is to build respectful collaborations with Indigenous knowledge holders, beginning with Peninsular Malaysia and Sápmi. Their participation, consent and perspectives will be essential in shaping how cultural and ecological knowledge is shared and taught.
-
Support is intended to help establish the project's foundations, including growing equipment, cultivation trials, educational materials, research and the development of future collaborations. The initiative is currently at an early stage and does not yet operate a permanent greenhouse.
